Contents page research

This is a contents page from Q music magazine as is clearly shown in the top left hand corner of the page. The text and page numbers are split up from the main image on the page by using a text box that is placed down the left hand side of the page. The idea is a lot like someone would imagine a contents page with a page number next to different topics/subjects so that the reader can easily find information they want to. For example "a round with" can be found on page 32 which will then lead to the reader being able to find out more. On this contents page there is large image of The Courteeners which suggests that they are one of the main topics within this issue of the magazine. They are also a well known band so they will therefore appeal more to the audience than an upcoming band who isn't as well known.
There are other features on the contents page such as what the magazine contains every month, a review section and a special oasis section. These are similar to the features box with a page number next to each topic/subject with a small image next to it. A reason I like this contents page is because it is quite simple and doesn't contain too much but is still appealing to the reader due to the images and the colour scheme.

This is the contents page from vibe magazine however unlike Q magazine they have decided not to add their title and logo to the contents page. Instead of having a clear title stating it is a vibe magazine they have chosen the put a V behind Kayne West. The colour scheme used in this contents page is mainly black and white with the only colour being the red heart on Kanye's chest. The black and white colours carry a meaning that this page is showing you what is clearly in the magazine no more no less and there it is in black and white right in front of you. Also the black and white colours show a contrast between eachover. Due to the only real colour being the red heart the audience is instanlty drawn to this. As it is a red heart it connotes to love and passion which could either represent Kanye as a person or maybe be a message to the reader that inside the magazine is something to do with Kanye personally. Also the hand on top of the heart which appears to be coming from behind the back of Kanye adds a sense of mystery. By using a famous artists such as Kanye West he is easily recongnised by the audience and therefore he and the magazine will appeal more to them. As well as this due to him being the main attraction of the contents page it tells the reader that he is the main attraction and if he is an intrest to the audience they will want to find out the latest news about what is happening regarding him. The layout of the page in terms of text makes it easy for the reader to navigate themselves around the magazine. It gives clear information with a topic next to a page number so the reader knows exactly what is in the magazine and were it is. The word contents carries a bold and striking effect. Due to the abstract way that it is presented it shows the reader that this magazine has it's own iconic style.

This is the contents page from Top of the Pops magazine. The layout of this magazine is quite different to the Q and Vibe contents pages that I have used as my other examples. Top of the Pops have gone against filling up the majority of the page with one artist and then having a basic page number and topic structure. Instead they have used a variety of methods to try and make it easy for the reader to find what they are looking for in the magazine. They have split the magazine up into different sections such as "wins and offers" and "all about you". I like how they have done this as it is very structured and makes it even easier for the reader to find exactly what they are looking for. They have also put a picture of the magazine front cover on the contents page with page numbers pointing to the main stories. This is useful to the reader as it is predominantly the main stories that they are going to be interested and this hands it to them straight away. The colour scheme used is the same as the front cover with bright colours such as pink and yellow on a white background. This is something that would not suit my magazine as this would mainly appeal to females and not males, this is a problem as my magazine is aimed at both genders.
